Grade 5 music theory ucas points?
But can you get Grade 5 Music Theory UCAS points? whether practical or in theory can have huge benefits to your higher
RSM Qualification title | RQF Qualification title | TQT |
---|---|---|
Grade 5 Performance | ABRSM Level 2 Certificate in Music Performance (Grade 5) | 180 |
Grade 6 Performance | ABRSM Level 3 Certificate in Music Performance (Grade 6) | 220 |
Grade 7 Performance | ABRSM Level 3 Certificate in Music Performance (Grade 7) | 270 |
Grade 5 Theory is also considered to be equivalent to a GCSE in music. A pass at grades 6, 7 and 8 will earn you UCAS points (university entrance points).
Grade | Pass | Merit |
---|---|---|
Grade 6 | 4 points | 5 points |
Grade 7 | 6 points | 7 points |
Grade 8 | 8 points | 9 points |
Are you confident that you'll pass your grade 5 theory exam? How about bagging yourself a merit or distinction? The pass mark for the ABRSM music theory exams is 66%. To get a merit you need 80%, and a distinction is awarded for a result of 90% or more.
Although Grade 5 does not give you any UCAS points, can see set you on the road to taking Grade 6-8 Theory. At this level you can earn UCAS points for achieving these qualifications. So music theory can even help you get into university!
The Grade 5 Music Theory exam contains enough content to make it a challenge to learn and understand. However, this does depend on how much music theory your child has done before. Many teachers struggle to fit in music theory alongside teaching children how to play their instrument.
A student who has achieved a good pass, merit or distinction at grade 5 will be an extremely competent pianist able to read music and play a whole variety of pieces from classical through to pop and jazz. This will normally take around 5 to 7 years to achieve.
Grade 5 truly is bordering the intermediate to advanced level of piano playing and reaching this level is a massive triumph so you should take a moment to congratulate yourself!
You need to be able to perform music a minimum of a Grade 4 level in Year 11 for your final performance, preferably Grade 5, in order to be able to access the highest marks. You do not have to be at this level in Year 9! How is it different to Music lessons at KS3?
Do you get UCAS points for Grade 6 theory?
Trinity College London's Level 3 qualifications (Grades 6-8) in music performance and theory are included in the UK Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) tariff, and attract UCAS points for university and higher education entry.

Grade 5 Music Theory: a prerequisite for Practical and Performance Grades 6 to 8. Candidates must pass Music Theory Grade 5 or above before taking a Practical or Performance Grade 6, 7 or 8.
So how long does it take?!
Each grade is cumulative, so a complete beginner might manage grade 5 after a year to 18 months. Grade 1 often takes a bit longer than grades 2-4, because the student is more familiar with theory papers by the later stages, and there is not a huge jump between the grades.
Yes, Grade 5 theory is tricky for many, but it has so many benefits for those wanting to go beyond Grade 5 level that it really shouldn't be ignored. Music theory is bascially learning how to write music down or the 'study of how music works'. to reach grade 5, max 2 years, depending on how much you practice.
- Grade 1 - For beginners.
- Grade 2 - For junior high school level musicians.
- Grade 3 - For high school level musicians.
- Grade 4 - For university and professional level musicians.
- Grade 5 - Challenging for professionals.
- Grade 6 - Some of the most difficult music available anywhere.
If you just want to understand music notation and to have a basic understanding of the fundamentals of music, then calculus would be much more difficult. The “hardest” parts of music theory, that is, things like sight singing atonal music or dictation with several simultaneous voices, can be largely overcome by talent.
Grade 5. The next level, grade 5, is even more challenging. You start to see longer pieces from the standard piano repertoire, such as a Bach Invention. This level also includes staccato scales and multiple major and minor scales, all of which are two octaves.
This also states that the 'typical Grade 5 practical candidate is 14 years old'.
How many hours to practice piano grade 5?
Grade | Total Hours | Minutes per practice |
---|---|---|
Grade 5 | 160 | 40-45 |
Grade 6 | 285 | 40-45 |
Grade 7 | 220 | 45-50 |
Grade 8 | 250 | 50-60 |
The full version of Fur Elise is considered reasonably difficult, broadly an intermediate piece around grade 5, but a shorter arrangement of only the famous section is often taught as well.
- Allemande In D Minor.
- Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum.
- Fantasie In D Minor, K. 397.
- Farewell (Abschied)
- The Lake At Evening.
- Les niais de Sologne (The Simpletons Of Sologne)
- March Of The Trolls (Trolltog)
- Prelude In B Minor.
I'll discuss some of the factors that affect how long it takes below, but here's what I usually say: Children who get to piano grade 8 have often been playing for around 10 years. Some adults and older teenagers can do grade 8 piano in 3 years if they really want to, but will miss some of the technical foundations.
You can skip music theory grades in a similar way to piano grades or any other instrumental grades. Because grade 5 music theory is a prerequisite for ABRSM grades 6 to 8, the majority of people skip straight to taking grade 5 music theory without grades 1 to 4.
Remember: Grade 8 is the equivalent of an A-Level. Those who received their professional training at a Music College at postgraduate level hold a Master of Music in Solo Piano Performance.
This will depend on the course you're applying for. The lowest score you'll need is 144 UCAS points. In some cases, they may accept slightly less.
Achieving 96 UCAS Points opens up many options to study one of our undergraduate programmes, from HNCs to BA Hons and BSc Hons. Our programmes which range from business and management to engineering and sport are awarded by some of the country's leading universities and awarding bodies.
A full degree would usually require 360 points: 120 at stage 1 (equivalent to the first year of a degree at a conventional university), 120 at stage 2 and 120 at stage 3. To apply to Oxford, students would need to have completed, or be studying for, at least 120 points at stage 1 or above, in appropriate subjects.
There are many different ways of achieving 120 UCAS Tariff points. Some of the most common ways are: 3 A-levels – Grades BBB, or A*CC. 2 A-levels plus 2 AS – Grades BB+aa, or AB+bb.
Is 128 UCAS points enough?
According to reports from UCAS, most business-related courses require BBB at A-Level which brings a total of 120 UCAS points. On the other hand, law related courses will usually ask for ABB at A-Level which amounts to 128 UCAS points.
112 points may sound like a lot, but actually, it's not as bad as it seems and most students can achieve it with studying 3 A Levels. All A Levels come with UCAS points, the maximum number for one being 56 and that would require an A* grade. The lowest amount of UCAS points you can get for an A Level is 16 (grade E).
1. Take an extra A-level or AS-level. Most obviously, you can boost your number of UCAS points by taking on an extra A-level or AS-level. While it's standard to take three A-levels, many of the brightest students will be taking four or even five A-levels, or four A-levels with perhaps an extra AS-level on top of that.
What is the average number of UCAS points? In terms of the tariffs that individual institutions offer, this can vary significantly, depending on the university in question. Average course entry requirements can range between 95 UCAS points to as high as 208 UCAS points.
Sight reading is tested in all grades in ABRSM music exams but is only a must in higher grades in Trinity. In ABRSM, grade 5 theory is a prerequisite for grades 6 to 8 practical but there are no prerequisites for Trinity exams. The exams are different in their exam formats, prerequisites and marking schemes.
Students learn about these musical elements: duration, pitch, design, tone color, expressive qualities and cultural context. Students explore beat, meter, rhythm, melody, harmony, tonality, texture, form, tone color, dynamics, tempo, articulation, style, and music background.
Fifth grade (also 5th Grade or Grade 5) is the fifth year of formal or compulsory education. In the United States, the fifth grade is typically the fifth and final year of primary school, though it may be the first year of middle school.

These courses require a student to not only think musically, but also to sing, to play the piano, to take melodic and harmonic dictation, and to memorize a great number of musical laws. Music theory courses are usually the most challenging academic courses that music majors take.
Grades 1 to 5 Music Theory exams are marked out of a total of 75 with 50 being required for a pass, 60 for a Merit and 65 for a Distinction.
What do I need to know for grade 5 music theory?
- Irregular time signatures and the grouping of notes and rests.
- The tenor C clef.
- Transposition at the octave between clefs and transposition to concert pitch of instruments in Bb, A or F.
- Scales and key signatures of all major and minor keys up to and including six sharps and flats.
In Grade 5 Theory, you only have to recognise chords I, II, IV and V. In a major key, I, IV and V are major chords but ii is a minor chord. In a minor key, i and iv are minor, ii is diminished, and V is major and includes an accidental (because of the raised 7th of the scale).
Grade 5 truly is bordering the intermediate to advanced level of piano playing and reaching this level is a massive triumph so you should take a moment to congratulate yourself!
