The Importance of the Buffalo
Dodge City was the Buffalo capital for three years until mass slaughter destroyed the huge herds and left the prairie littered with decaying carcasses. An estimated 850,000 buffalo hides were shipped from Dodge City in the years 1872-1874.
Saddle-sore cowboys, buffalo hunters, railroad workers and others found a way to blow off steam in Dodge City, which earned its reputation as not only the cowboy capital of the world but as a Wild West town where differences were settled on Front Street with guns ablazing.
Then, Bodie, with its population of over 10,000, was one of the most infamous places in the whole U.S.A., reputed as the worst, most violent and most lawless town in the Wild West.
If you're a Gunsmoke fan and have never visited Dodge City, prepare for a surprise. The real Dodge City doesn't look like the TV version. The studio filmed the show in several locations, none of them in Kansas. Even though the show's producers didn't film the show in Dodge, the city has plenty to offer its guests.
Over the years, Dodge City, Kansas has been synonymous with well-known names such as Bat Masterson, Wyatt Earp, and Doc Holliday.

There were 635 episodes and many of the outdoor scenes for this show were shot in Johnson Canyon near Kanab, Utah. The setting of Gunsmoke is Dodge City, Kansas during the 1870's. A replica of the Hollywood set was created just three miles outside of Kanab.
