Purpose of the STCW Code
The Code was established to set certain minimum international training standards for professional mariners. The level of certification and training you are required to have is based on the capacity you serve in & the type of vessel you work on.
STCW II/4 Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch (RFPNW) is a qualified rating and Endorsement, designed to fulfill the requirements of of the STCW Convention in the deck department of an ocean going vessel.
What is the STCW Regulation III 5?
Standard of Competence
Every able seafarer engine serving on a seagoing ship powered by main propulsion machinery of 750 kW propulsion power or more shall be required to demonstrate the competence to perform the functions at the support level, as specified in column 1 of table A-III/5.

The STCW Code
The minimum standards of competence required for seagoing personnel are given in detail in a series of tables. Part B of the Code contains recommended guidance which is intended to help Parties implement the Convention.
The result will be 8 hours 30 minutes (8:30 hours or 8.5 hours in decimal) or 510 minutes. There are 8 full hours between these times. It also supports the subtraction of lunch breaks and other types of pauses from the total hours in between.
How Long Are STCW Certificates Valid? STCW endorsements need to be renewed when your MMC expires after five years from issue. To renew STCW endorsements, you'll need to complete additional coursework, revalidating or refreshing specific topics.
At the very minimum, you will need to obtain STCW Basic Safety Courses in order to apply to work on a ship. These courses can usually be completed within a week - during one block booking - at a designated STCW training centre.
The STCW Convention is organized in three components: the Articles, the Annex, and the STCW Code. These three components are interrelated and none can be read in isolation from the other two.

Is STCW and basic training the same?
STCW Basic Training (BT) or STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) as it is called formerly, is required for seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship at all levels such as deck and engine room rating qualifications, for most navigation, and all engineering certificates of competency.
